Sclerotherapy for Leg Veins
Millions of women and even some men are bothered by unsightly spider and varicose veins. This problem is often hereditary but can also be due to occupation, pregnancy, hormonal shifts etc. These problem veins often become noticeable in the teen years. For others, the veins don’t become obvious until the 30’s or 40’s.
Sclerotherapy can enhance your appearance. However it is unrealistic to believe each and every affected vein will disappear completely as a result of treatment. Two or more sessions are often required to achieve optimal results. You should also be aware that this procedure treats only those veins that are currently visible. It will not permanently alter your venous system or necessarily prevent new veins from surfacing in the future. As time passes, you may find that you need touch ups or full treatments for new veins that appear. Some patients will have treatment every few years. Even if you choose not to have further sclerotherapy, your legs will still look better than if you never had treatment at all.
Most patients are very pleased with the difference sclerotherapy makes. Your legs will appear clearer and healthier looking.
Prior to the procedure you will have an initial consultation with a technician and the doctor. You are not eligible for treatment if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or bedridden. If you have had blood clots in the past, your eligibility will be determined on an individual basis.
Sclerotherapy is done using a solution injected through a very fine needle directly into the vein. Many patients report feeling very little to no discomfort. Some cramping can occur usually when larger veins are injected. You may feel some cramping for up to a few days after treatment.
Patients are required to wear medical compression stockings for two weeks following treatment. The medical compression stockings we carry are much more flattering than traditional medical stockings and are very durable. They come in a variety of colors and styles. Your measurements will be taken upon consultation.
Plan to wear shorts the day of your treatment.
Do not apply creams or lotions to your legs the day of treatment.
Immediately after your treatment you will put on your compression stockings and take a quick walk around the vicinity. You are advised to wear your compression stockings for 24 hours following your initial procedure. After that, daily wear for eight to ten hours is all that is needed for two weeks.
Do not do strenuous aerobic activity or weight lifting for two weeks following the procedure. This includes lunges, dead-lifts (etc) using weights.
Side effects you may experience can be some itching. Redness and bruising can occur at injection site. If you do experience these, they should subside within a few days. Bruising may also occur. A common cosmetic complication is pigmentation irregularity. Brownish spots may occur and can take a few months to fade.
Also be aware that your veins will often look worse before they begin to look better.
A follow up consultation/treatment will be scheduled one month after your initial treatment.
